TORONTO, July 30 2019 – The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is pleased to extend congratulations to the four Masterfeeds National Junior Beef Heifer Show high placing showmanship competitors that will be representing Team Canada at the National Young Stars Competition in the United Kingdom in August 2019. To be eligible the Champion, Reserve Champion and Honourable Mention Senior and Intermediate Showmanship Winners at the Royal were required to submit a short essay to the selection committee outlining why the Masterfeeds National Junior Beef Heifer Show is important to them and what they have gained by competing in the show, as well as why they would like to be a part of Team Canada at the National Young Stars Competition.
The Royal extends congratulations to:
- Champion Senior Showperson – Kaitlin Cavanagh, Carleton 4-H AssociationChampion
- Intermediate Showperson – Reegan Sawyer, Middlesex 4-H AssociationReserve
- Champion Intermediate Showperson – Brent Clysdale, Peterborough 4-H Association
- Honourable Mention Intermediate Showperson – Abby Anderson, Peterborough 4-H Association
While in the United Kingdom, Team Canada will have the opportunity to experience British farming firsthand, travel across the UK to see tourist attractions, meet other youth involved in the agriculture industry, and participate in a youth beef show, learning the showing and fitting practices that are customary in the UK.
“This will be the 8th year the National Junior Beef Heifer Show has done an exchange to the UK, having sent 21 4-H members in past years. It is humbling to be a part of what these 4-H members consistently call a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity,’” states Karen Mansfield, Coordinator & Chaperone. “They have made contacts that they continue to network with and have learned that the beef industry and agriculture in other parts of the world offer differences and challenges they can learn from. We have built a strong relationship with the National Young Stars who are a like-minded group of dedicated supporters of youth in agriculture.”
The National Young Stars Competition operates differently than the Masterfeeds National Junior Beef Heifer Show. Team Canada will compete as two teams of two and they will receive all scores as a team, not individually. There are two calves per team that they must prepare for the ring through washing, drying, clipping, dressing and final preparation while demonstrating teamwork, knowledge of the industry, and an understanding of health and safety while working with animals and equipment.
Other elements of the competition include stall presentation and promotion, stock judging placing and reasons, parading and ring etiquette, as well as an interview.
In partnership with the National Young Stars Competition, the Masterfeeds National Junior Beef Heifer Show welcomes two to four youth to come and compete at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. While being hosted in Ontario the individuals will have the opportunity to take part in farm tours, visit tourist attractions, and participate in the Masterfeeds National Junior Beef Heifer Show held this year on November 1st and 2nd at Exhibition Place, Toronto.
